SWELL
SWELL was shortlisted under the category of Product Design - Handmade Product by the IDI awards 2017
This project was a collaboration with Peter Cosgrave
Swell is a fast consumer product and packaging designed to benefit our planet as waste. Swells two bars of soap & deodorant have been distilled down into just the basic materials themselves eliminating and excess packaging or plastic seen in most other fast consumer goods. The surrounding packaging is created using recycled paper pulp and seaweed. Once discarded the Bladderwrack seaweed, often used by Irish farmers along the west coast, acts as a natural fertiliser for the earth due to its high levels of potassium enriching the earth instead of adding to our unsustainable landfill or ocean waste
The Making
To use the bar you simply break each section off and rub until gone. Once the bar is used up the packaging can then be placed in your garden or compost bin or even the ocean.
By creating zero waste and becoming a positive to the land once discarded, Swell acts as a pioneering product and brand to influence a change in packaging and fast consumer good design.
A #wavetowave initiative was also set up to donate a percent of the profit to ocean waste removal efforts with every #wavetowave posted to social media alongside a picture of the SWELL product. This creates a consumer waste conscious community, furthering pollution prevention efforts
